It all started at 2847, a home surrounded by towering elms, oaks, walnuts, and so many trees alive with song. Birds filled our yard, nesting high above us — and sometimes their fragile chicks would tumble down. Guided by our mother’s love, we learned to rescue them, rolling tiny bits of hamburger to mimic worms and coax them to eat, giving them a chance to survive.
